WESTMINSTER 113, CASE 109...
CLEVELAND, OH (January 3, 2005) - Case Western Reserve University junior guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) scored a game high and tied a career high with 36 points to go along with 12 rebounds as the Spartans fell 113-109 tonight to visiting Westminster College (PA) in the Veale Center .
Despite shooting just 33.3 percent (18-54) from the field in the first 20 minutes of play Westminster, who came into the game averaging 109.1 points per game and giving up 107.1, led 59-46 at the half. The Titans went 12 of 41 from behind the arc in the half. Case shot 64.7 percent (22-34) in the first 20 minutes, led by sophomore guard Matt Cannan's (Dublin, OH) 14. Cannan finished the game with 24 points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
Case outscored Westminster 63-54 in the second half, shooting above 60 percent from the field once again (28-45, 62.2% - 63.3% for the game), but could not rebound from their 16 turnovers (26 total) and 2 of 9 performance from the free throw line (9-18 total) in the first half. The Spartans did bring the game within three, 101-104 at the 1:41 mark and then two, 109-111 with seven seconds left in the game. However Westminster was able to hang on in this track meet of a basketball game.
The Titans, who improved to 10-3 on the year, had six players score in double digits led by senior forward Pat O'Connor's 23. They shot 64 three pointers (19-64) in the contest, 95 shots in all.
The game marked the first 100 plus point showing for the Spartans since the 1998-99 season when they defeated Denison University 103-85. Case, who falls to 2-7, travels to Oberlin College on Wednesday night for a 7:30 p.m. game.
