GUILFORD 85, CASE 82...
GREENSBORO, NC (December 31, 2004) - Despite a game-high 28 points and eight rebounds from junior forward Carson Oren (South Bend, IN), the Case Western Reserve Spartans (2-6) were unable to get past the host Guilford College Quakers (6-4) as Case fell 85-82 in Greensboro, NC.
The New Year's Eve matinee featured 15 lead changes and nine ties as Case suffered their second defeat in two days on the road.
Case got out to a fast start behind 16 first-half points from Oren and 13 from junior guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) with the Spartans taking a 40-37 lead into halftime. Lafe finished the game with 21 points and five rebounds.
The second half proved to be tight with the outcome being decided in the final minute of play. An Oren three-pointer with just 22 seconds remaining cut the Guilford lead to just one point, 81-80. Two Quaker free-throws from Caleb Kimbrough stretched the lead to three, 83-80, with 19 seconds left. On Case's next possession, Guilford was able to steal the ball as only 10 seconds remained on the clock and the Spartans were forced to foul quickly. The Quakers missed their two free throw attempts but got the rebound and made a lay-up to increase the lead to five. A Lafe lay-up at the buzzer made the final score 85-82 in favor of the Quakers.
Case was 6-13 from three-point range with Andrew Impastato (Freehold, NJ) and Oren each hitting three apiece for the Spartans. The Guilford Quakers were led by guard Jordan Snipes with 18 points.
Case will return to Cleveland for a home contest Monday, January 3 against Westminster College at 7:30 p.m. in the Veale Center.
