MEN'S BASKETBALL—2004

CLEVELAND, OH - Case Western Reserve University sophomore forward Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) had a double-double with 19 points and a game high 11 rebounds in a 79-90 loss to the University of Chicago at Horsburgh Gymnasium. Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) added 20 points for the Spartans (4-18, 2-9 UAA) to lead all scorers. Mike Dolezal (Michigan City, IN) led the Maroons (9-13, 5-6 UAA) with 15 points.

The Spartans trailed by as many as 11 points in the first half, but went to the locker room behind by nine points, 38-47. In the opening half, Oren scored 12 of his 19 points while sophomore guard Richard Mullen (Columbus, OH) added nine of his 15 points for Case on three three-point field goals. Both teams shot the ball very well in the first 20 minutes as Case shot 53.3% (16-30) while the Maroons shot 52.9% (18-34). Chicago hit 7 of their 16 three point attempts (43.8%) in the first half including three from behind the arc by Brian Cuttica (Hinsdalle, IL_ who scored all 11 of his points in the opening half. The Maroons held a 18-11 advantage on the boards and scored 16 points off of eight Spartan turnovers.

In the second half, Chicago led by as many as 17 points (4:08 remaining), but Lafe scored 12 of his 20 points to keep the Spartans close. Case shot 43.6% (17-39) in the final 20 minute while the Maroons cooled off to 35.7% (10-28). The Spartans outrebounded the Maroons 24-23 in the second half. Chicago hit 19-25 free throws down the stretch to ensure a victory.

Jacob Baker (Orrville, OH) added 11 points and 6 rebounds for the Spartans. Scott Fisher (Bloomington, IN) had 12 points and Uche Okonkwo (Mount Pleasant, MI) had 11 to round out the scorers in double figures for Chicago.

The Spartans travel to Rochester on Friday with the game tipping off at 8:00 pm.
