CLEVELAND, OH - Case Western Reserve University sophomore forward Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) scored 25 points and pulled down a team high nine rebounds as the Spartans (4-17, 2-8 UAA) fell to the Bears of Washington University (16-5, 8-2 UAA) by a final score of 89-82 at Horsburgh Gymnasium at the Veale Center. Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) scored a game high 27 points and pulled down seven rebounds for the Spartans.
Behind a strong shooting effort, Washington jumped out to the early halftime lead 54-40. The Bears shot 56.8% (21-37) from the floor in the first 20 minutes while the Spartans hit 16 of their 36 attempts in the opening half for 44.4%. Oren had 19 of his 25 points in the first 20 minutes for Case. Rob Keller (Lakeside, CA) had 19 points including five three pointers at the half for the Bears. The Spartans held the initial rebounding advantage as they had 20 rebounds compared to 19 for the Bears.
The Spartans pulled closer in the second half behind a strong performance by Lafe. Case's sophomore guard scored 17 of his 27 points in the final 20 minutes. The Spartans outscored the Bears 42-35 in the half with a strong shooting performance. Case shot 48.6% as they connected on 17 of their 35 attempts in the second half while Washington shot 36.7% (11-30). The Spartans held the 43-38 rebounding advantage for the game over the Bears.
Jacob Baker (Orrville, OH) added nine points and six rebounds for the Spartans. Keller ended with 24 points for the Bears while Ryan DeBoer (St. Charles, IL) pulled down a game high ten rebounds to go with his 12 points. Scott Stone (St. Louis, MO) also had 20 points for Washington.
The Spartans host the University of Chicago on Sunday at 1:00 pm.
