CLEVELAND, OH – Case Western Reserve University (4-15, 2-6 UAA) sophomore guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) hit a shot with 5.2 seconds remaining in tonight’s game at New York University (16-3, 5-3 UAA) to give Case a 70-68 lead, but NYU sophomore guard James Janeczek (Tuckahoe, NY) ran the court and hit a three as time expired to defeat the Spartans 71-70 in the Coles Sports Center in downtown New York.
Case freshman guard Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH) scored 10 points in the first half as the Spartans took a two-point lead, 35-33, into the break. Cannan finished the game with a double-double, 16 points and 10 rebounds. The last 20 minutes was all Lafe. The local Hawken graduate scored 13 points in the half, including the go ahead with 5.2 seconds remaining. Case sophomore forward Carson Oren also recorded a double-double with 11 rebounds and 12 points.
Besides the end result both teams were equally matched throughout the contest. NYU edged the Spartans in rebounds 38-37, but turn the ball over 15 times compared to Case’s 13. The Spartans shot 41.4 percent from the field in the game and the Violets 42.4 percent. Janeczek had a team high 18 points for NYU.
Case travels to Boston tomorrow and will face UAA foe Brandeis University Sunday afternoon. The Spartans lost to New York 80-63 this past Sunday in Cleveland.
