MEN'S BASKETBALL—2004

CLEVELAND, OH – Case Western Reserve University (4-14, 2-5 UAA) had three players score in double digits led by sophomore guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH), who had a game high 23 points, but they fell at home to New York University (15-3, 4-3 UAA) 80-63 in University Athletic Association action.

The Spartans were in it at the intermission, only trailing by six, 42-36. Case sophomore guard Richard Mullen (Columbus, OH) was perfect (3 for 3) from behind the arc in the first half, scoring 11 points (14 in the game). Lafe added 14, but as a team, the Spartans only shot 35.5 percent (11-31) compared to the Violets 50 percent (15-30).

Case had it within four, 52-48, after a Lafe jumper at the 12:55 mark in the second half, but New York went on to outscore the Spartans 28-15 in the remainder of the contest to win their third straight. The Violets had five players in double digits led by sophomore guard James Janeczek’s (Tuckahoe, NY) 18.

Sophomore forward Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) added 12 points and a game high 10 rebounds. Case travels to New York this Friday to face the Violets at 8:00 p.m.
