CLEVELAND, OH - Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH), a Hawken grad, scored a team high 17 points as the Spartans (4-13, 2-4 UAA) defeated the Judges of Brandeis (3-12, 0-6 UAA) in Horsburgh Gymnasium at the Veale Center by a score of 71-68. Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) added a double-double to help lead Case to victory as he had 15 points and a team high 10 rebounds.
In the first half, Case came out of the gate shooting well. Case shot 53.1% (17-32) compared to the 40.6% (13-32) by Brandeis. The Case defense forced eight turnovers in the first twenty minutes while the Judges out rebounded the Spartans 20-16. Rich Mullen (Columbus, OH) connected on four of his first five shots including all three he shot from behind the three point arc as he had 11 points at the half.
In the second half, the defenses of both teams picked up. The Spartans forced Brandeis to shoot just 35.1% (13-37) while Case shot 39.1% from the floor connecting on nine of 23 shots. The Spartans shot 75% (9-12) from the line in the second twenty minutes to hang on to the victory.
Brandeis was led by Bryan Lambert (Auburn, ME), who had a game high 24 points as well as the game high in rebounds with 11. Omri Ayalon (Potsdam, NY) added 22 for the Judges.
Case hosts New York University on Sunday, tip-off is 1:00 p.m.
