January 23, 2004
Cleveland, OH - Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) scored a game high 36 points as the Spartans (3-12. 1-3 UAA) defeated Carnegie Mellon (10-5, 2-2 UAA) by a final score of 86-75 in Horsburgh Gymnasium at the Veale Center.
An amazing start by Lafe gave the Spartans an early advantage. In the first half, Lafe was perfect from the field as he made all ten of his shots including a three pointer, which gave him 21 points at the half. Carson Oren (South Bend, IN) had 13 points and five of his game high 13 rebounds in the first 20 minutes to help give Case a 50-23 advantage. The Spartans were on fire in the opening half as they shot 70.0% from the field on 21 of 30 shooting. They also held a 24-16 rebounding advantage for the half as well.
Oren and Lafe had 15 apiece in the second half to help to ensure a Spartan victory despite a fierce second half by the Tartans. Carnegie Mellon outscored Case 52-36 in the last 20 minutes as they hit 53.8% (7-13) of their three point attempts in the half. However, the efforts of Lafe and Oren were just too much to overcome for Carnegie Mellon.
The Tartans were lead by Michael Divens with 21 points and Clay Barlow-Wilcox pulled down 11 rebounds. The Spartans shot 54.8% from the floor for the game. Case outrebounded the Tartans 46-40 in the game as well.
Case hosts Rochester, who is ranked second (D-III) in the country, on Sunday. Tip-off is at 1:00 pm.
