Washington & Jefferson 89, Case 86 (OT)
WASHINGTON, PA - Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH), a Hawken graduate, scored a game high 24 points, 15 of them coming in the last 25 minutes as the Spartans fell at Washington & Jefferson College 86-89 in overtime. Lafe also grabbed a game high 12 rebounds.
W&J, who trailed Case by ten (70-80) with five minutes remaining in the game, went on a 11-1 run topped off by junior forward Steve Button's jumper with 32 seconds left in regulation, which sent it into overtime. Button finished the contest with a team high 22 points.
The Spartans, who shot just 11.1% (1 of 9) from the field in the five minute overtime, never regained the lead. They drop to 1-5 on the year and host Grove City College this Saturday at 7:30 p.m.
Case sophomore forward Carson Oren (South Bend, OH) scored 13 of his 23 total points and grabbed eight of his game high 12 rebounds in the first 20 minutes as the Spartans led convincingly (43-30) at intermission. Case turned the ball over 12 times in the first half, but out rebounded the Presidents 31-19.
W&J (2-3) forced the Spartans to turn the ball over 13 more times in the second half (25 total) and connected on 20 of 35 shots (57.1%) from the field to get back into the game. Case sophomore guard Richard Mullen (Columbus, OH) added 18 points on the evening.
