Case 78, Hiram 73
CLEVELAND, OH - Case Western Reserve University first year Head Coach Sean McDonnell's first win at Case comes at the hands of his former team. The Spartans defeated Hiram College 78-73 this afternoon in the consolation game of the Cleveland Cage Classic hosted by John Carroll University. McDonnell was the head coach at Hiram the previous three seasons before coming to Case last month (Oct.8).
The Spartans (1-4) forced Hiram to turn the ball over 10 times in the first half as they led by 18 (46-28) at the break. Sophomore forward Carson Oren (South Bend, OH) had 11 of his game total 17 points in the first 20 minutes as his team shot 52.9% (18-34) from the field.
Case sophomore guard Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH) picked up where Oren left of in the second half. Lafe scored 14 of his game high 20 points in the last 20 minutes to secure his team's first victory of the season. Hiram did battle back, outscoring the Spartans 45-32 in the half, but dropped their second straight.
Case freshman guard Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH) added 14 points and junior forward Dave Lenzer (N. Canton, OH) grabbed a team high nine rebounds. Hiram had four players in double digits, led by sophomore guard A.J. White (Englewood, FL), who had 17 points.
The Spartans travel to Washington & Jefferson College Monday for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
