JOHN CARROLL 13, CASE 9...

CLEVELAND, OH (April 3, 2008) – The Case Western Reserve University softball team out-hit John Carroll University 17 to 10, but dropped game 1 of their doubleheader 13-9 in extra innings.
Sophomore catcher Chelsae Poelking (Brecksville, OH) and senior center fielder Lauren Seeds (Pickerington, OH-pictured) each hit two-run home runs in the fifth inning to give the Spartans a 9-5 lead. John Carroll then scored three in the sixth and one in the seventh to tie the game and send it into extra innings, then they scored four in the ninth. Poelking finished the game 3-for-6 with 3 RBIs, and Seeds went 2-for-5 with a walk, 2 RBIs, and 2 runs scored. Six batters had at least two hits for the Spartans, led by sophomore third baseman Katie Svilar (Orange Village, OH), who went 4-for-5 with a walk and a double, and freshman left fielder Teddi Jacobson (Solon, OH), who went 4-for-6 with two doubles.
Junior pitcher Ruthe Sagartz (Albuqerque, NM) pitched the complete game (4-8), giving up seven earned runs on ten hits and four walks, striking out ten.
