CASE 7, HIRAM 6...
HIRAM, OH (April 30, 2006) – The Case Western Reserve University softball team survived a seventh-inning scare to beat Hiram College in the first game of a doubleheader by a score of 7-6.
Case had twelve hits in the game, led by sophomore Amanda Bell (Carroll, OH) - pictured, who went 3-for-4 with three RBIs, including a two-run dinger in the seventh, her sixth homer of the season. Case's big inning was the third, in which five runs were scored on five hits, a walk, and an error, including an RBI ground-rule double by sophomore Jen Bullen (Willoughby, OH) and a 2-RBI single by junior Carrie Casden (Worthington, OH). Casden went 2-for-4, Bullen went 1-for-3, senior Kristin Courtney (Dayton, OH) went 2-for-3 with an RBI, and senior Amber Hammell (Parkersburg, WV) went 2-for-3 with a stolen base and a run scored.
Bell pitched the game and was cruising until a five-run Hiram seventh on five straight one-out hits, the last being a home run. Immediately after, though, she got the last two batters to ground out and strike out. She gave up six runs (five earned) on nine hits and one walk, striking out five.
