BETHANY 6, CASE 1...
CLEVELAND, OH (April 6, 2006) – The Case Western Reserve University softball team suffered a heartbreaking 10-inning 6-1 loss in the second game of a doubleheader against Bethany College. Case moves to 10-14-1 with the doubleheader split while Bethany is 10-12 on the season.
The teams traded runs in the fifth inning, and then neither team could score until the tenth, when the Bisons took advantage of a walk and an error, as well as getting four hits of their own, to score five runs.
Case's only run scored on an RBI single by senior Amber Hammell - pictured (Parkersburg, WV). However, they had many other chances to score, with nine hits in the game, but they stranded twelve runners on base. Hammell went 3-for-4 in the game, while sophomore Amanda Bell (Carroll, OH) went 2-for-5 with a towering shot in the sixth inning that hopped on top of the fence and back into play for a single. Had it gone over, Case would have led two to one at the time.
Freshman Ruth Sagartz (Albuquerque, NM) pitched all ten innings, giving up six runs (three earned) on ten hits and three walks, striking out eleven.
The Spartans will travel to Michigan this weekend for doubleheaders against Calvin College and Albion College .
