CASE 5, MOUNT UNION 1 ...
CLEVELAND, OH (April 21, 2005) – The Case Western Reserve University softball team bounced back in game two of a double header to defeat the Mount Union Purple Raiders 5-1. Sparking the victory for Case was pitcher Jackie Rutherford (LaBelle, PA) who gave up just three hits and one unearned run while striking out six batters in seven innings of work.
Mount Union looked like they were going to pick up right where they left off in game one as they went up 1-0 in the top of the first inning. However, Case battled back to tie the game up 1-1 as Leah Shook (Poughkeepsie, NY) doubled then scored on a Rachelle Gunselman (Wadsworth, OH) RBI ground out.
The game remained tied at one until the Spartans broke out for four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a commanding 5-1 lead. Scoring in the inning for Case were Elisha Bierman (LaGrange, OH), Amanda Bell (Carroll, OH), Carrie Casden (Worthington, OH), and Shook. Shook and Casden each finished 2-for-3 from the plate with an RBI as Shook scored two runs and Casden one.
With the victory, Case ended a four-game losing streak as they improved to 8-32 while Mount Union fell to 26-7 overall.
