ALLEGHENY 5, CASE 4 ...
MEADVILLE, PA (April 10, 2005) – Rachelle Gunselman (Wadsworth, OH) and Leah Shook (Poughkeepsie, NY) each turned in three hit performances for Case Western Reserve, but two Allegheny College runs in the bottom of the seventh inning sealed a 5-4 victory for the Gators.
Case moved out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Gunselman reached base with a single to left center then was able to score when the Allegheny center fielder made a fielding error on a single by Carrie Casden (Worthington, OH). Casden, who finished the day two for four with an RBI, was then driven in on a Shook double to right center field.
Allegheny got on the scoreboard with a run in the second inning, but Case added two more in the fifth to take a 4-1 lead. Lauren Seeds (Pickerington, OH) led off the inning with a double and then advanced to third on a bunt single by Gunselman. Gunselman stole second base and a Casden single with an Allegheny error scored both Seeds and Gunselman. Case had the opportunity to break the game wide open with the bases loaded and two outs, but a pop out to the shortstop ended the Spartan threat.
Allegheny crept closer with two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score 4-3. Case pitcher Jackie Rutherford (LaBelle, PA) had pitched well until she ran into trouble in the seventh inning. Two unearned runs in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Allegheny the victory. Rutherford finished the day with six innings of work, allowing five runs (two unearned) on eight hits. Kerry Hunsicker (Wadsworth, OH) relieved Rutherford with a run scored and two on and the score tied at four in the seventh.
The loss moved Case to 6-19 with Allegheny improving to 8-9.
