CASE 4, THIEL 3 ...
GREENVILLE, PA (April 9, 2005) – The Case Western Reserve Spartans swept Thiel College in a double header this afternoon with a 4-3 victory in the second game. Case was led by freshman Lauren Seeds (Poughkeepsie, NY) who scored two runs for the second game in a row and has now scored seven runs in the last four games.
Case entered the Thiel half of the fourth inning with a 2-1 lead on two Seeds runs scored in the first and third innings. Thiel jumped ahead 3-2 with two runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Case, however fought back in the top-half of the fifth inning to take a 4-3 go-ahead lead. Rachelle Gunselman (Wadsworth, OH) led off the inning with a base hit and then stole second base. Carrie Casden (Worthington, OH) hit a RBI single to drive in Gunselman and tie the game at three apiece. Elisha Bierman (LaGrange, OH) then drove in Casden with a base hit of her own to score the game-winning run.
Senior pitcher Jackie Rutherford (LaBelle, PA) went seven strong innings for Case in the victory. Rutherford struck out six Thiel batters and allowed just three earned runs on eight hits.
Case improves to 6-18 on the season while Thiel drops to 3-13. The Spartans will be action again tomorrow when they travel to Allegheny College to take on the Gators in a double header.
