EMORY 9 , CASE 3 & BRANDEIS 5, CASE 4 ...
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL (March 14, 2005) – In the final day of the University Athletic Association Tournament, the Case Western Reserve University women's softball team lost two games to finish in third place overall in the tournament. Case lost 9-3 to tournament runner-up Emory in the morning and the Spartans dropped a close 5-4 decision to Brandeis in their final game in Florida this season.
In the first game, Emory jumped out to a 7-0 lead through the first three innings. Case came back with three runs in the top of the fifth before the Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the inning. Case scored their runs when Amanda Bell (Carroll, OH) singled to left field with the bases loaded and two outs to drive in two runs. Sophomore Leah Shook (Poughkeepsie, NY) drove in another run when she doubled in Elisha Bierman (LaGrange, OH) from second base.
In the final game of the tournament, Case let a 4-2 lead slip away in late innings as they fell 5-4 to the previously winless Brandeis University. The Judges scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth inning after scoring the tieing run on a throwing error. Fellow Case freshmen Lauren Seeds (Pickerington, OH) and Rachelle Gunselman (Wadsworth, OH) each recorded two hits in the game with Seeds scoring two runs at the lead-off spot and Gunselman scoring a run and driving in a run. Amanda Bell pitched a complete game in the loss for the Spartans, giving up five runs (three earned) on 11 hits.
Case finished the UAA Tournament at 3-5, while leaving Florida with a 3-9 overall record.
