ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL (March 13, 2005) – The Case Western Reserve University women's softball team plated two games University Athletic Association Championship Tournament games on Sunday. The Spartans fell 10-0 to Washington University in game one and defeated the University of Rochester 4-3 in nine innings in their second game.
Washington pitchers only allowed two Spartan hits in game one. Freshman center fielder Lauren Seeds (Pickerington, OH) and freshman relief pitcher Kerry Hunsicker (Wadsworth, OH) went one for two from the plate respectively. Freshman pitcher Amanda Bell (Carroll, OH) picked-up the loss on the mound for the Spartans. Bell gave up nine hits and eight runs in 1.2 innings work.
In game two the University of Rochester scored three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the game at three all and send it into extra innings. Case failed to score a game winner in the bottom of the seventh. Spartans sophomore shortstop Leah Shook (Poughkeepsie, NY) led her team from the plate going four for five with two runs scored. Bell , who came into the game in the seventh after Rochester scored their runs, picked up the win. She threw three innings, allowing only three hits while striking out three.
In the ninth Shook doubled and then advanced to third on a wild pitch. Junior utility player Kristin Courtney (Greenville, OH) then knocked in the game winner via a single. Courtney finished the game two of five from the plate with and runs scored and RBI. Case improves moves to 3-7 overall and 3-3 in the UAA. They face Emory University at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow.
