CASE 12, ROCHESTER 6...
ALTAMONTE SPRINGS, FL (March 11, 2005) – The Case Western Reserve University softball team got their first win of the University Athletic Association Championship Tournament with a 12-6 victory in ten innings over the University of Rochester Yellow Jackets. The Spartans improved to 1-5 and 1-1 in the UAA Tournament which Rochester fell to 4-4 and 1-1 in the UAA.
The game was tied 3-3 in the seventh inning when the Spartans took a 5-3 lead in the top of the inning. In the bottom half of the inning, Alicia Citro hit a two-run homer for Rochester to tie the game 5-5 and force extra innings.
The two teams played scoreless eighth and ninth innings before the Case fireworks exploded in the tenth inning. The Spartans used seven consecutive singles to put seven runs up on the board in the inning. Rochester added a run in the bottom of the inning, but pitcher Amanda Bell (Carroll, OH) was able to get the final three outs needed for the victory.
Freshman catcher Elisha Bierman (LaGrange, OH) led Case by going four for five at the plate with two RBIs and two runs scored. Also recording two hits for Case were Leah Shook (Poughkeepsie, NY), Lauren Seeds (Pickerington, OH), and Bell. Leading the way for Rochester was Jessica Sorrentino who finished three for six on the day.
