HIRAM 8, CASE 7...
CLEVELAND, OH (April 9, 2008) – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team dropped game one of today's doubleheader at Hiram College , as the Terriers came away with an 8-7 over the Spartans in a non-conference regional match-up. The two teams will play one more game this afternoon.
The Spartans took an early lead in the top of the second, as three singles in-a-row by freshman catcher Steve Bills (Greensburg, PA – pictured), sophomore outfielder Phil Keefe (Newtonville, MA) and senior infielder Kevin Haley (Kent, OH) gave Case Western Reserve a 2-0 lead. Hiram would get one of those runs back in the bottom half of the inning to make it a 2-1 game.
Case Western Reserve would hold on to a 2-1 lead until the bottom of the fifth, as three runs on three hits and one Spartan error would give the Terriers a 4-2 advantage. Hiram would tack on one more in the bottom of the sixth to take a 5-2 lead.
The Spartan offense would bring the team back in the top of the seventh, as an RBI double by Bills and RBI singles by Keefe and freshman Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH) led to five runs and a 7-5 lead for the Spartans.
But two Hiram doubles and a game-winning RBI single by Cody Fincham proved to be the difference, as Hiram handed Case Western Reserve the loss.
Bills finished 2-for-3 in game one with two runs and one RBI, while Haley, Keefe, and freshman infielder Steve Crilley (Glenshaw, PA) each had two hits for the Spartans.
