CASE 16, BETHANY 11...
CLEVELAND, OH (April 8, 2008) – It was a high-scoring affair this afternoon at Nobby's Ballpark, as the Case Western Reserve University baseball team claimed a 16-11 victory over the Bison from Bethany College in game one of today's doubleheader.
The Spartans put up two runs in the bottom of the second, as two singles by senior shortstop Kevin Haley (Kent, OH) and freshman centerfielder Clay Hurley (Connellsville, PA) gave Case Western Reserve a 2-0 lead.
Freshman first baseman would make it a 3-0 game an inning later, as his RBI double to the gap in left-center drove home freshman Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH), who was previously hit by the pitch. The Spartans would tack on five runs an inning later to take an 8-0 lead.
The Bison would answer in the top of the fifth, as four hits combined with an error on a Milton Joyner that scored three runs, made it a six run inning for Bethany, making it an 8-6 game. After the Spartans scored two in the bottom half of the inning, the Bison would tack on five more runs in the top of the sixth to make it an 11-10 game.
Case Western Reserve would come back in the bottom of the sixth, as a Pecoraro double and a triple by freshman catcher Steve Bills (Greensburg, PA – pictured) made it an 11-11 game. Haley would follow it up with a single to right field to give the Spartans a 12-11 game. The Spartans scored six runs in the inning to all but seal the victory.
Hurley finished the game 3-for-3 with three runs and an RBI, while Bills finished 2-for-3 with one run and three RBI.
