MOUNT UNION 5, CASE 4...
CLEVELAND, OH (April 6, 2008) – In game two of this afternoon's doubleheader, the Case Western Reserve University baseball team fell 5-4 to the Purple Raiders from Mount Union College in a non-conference regional match-up at Nobby's Ballpark.
The Spartans will play another doubleheader on Apr. 8 when Bethany College comes to Nobby's Ballpark for two games, with game one scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
The Purple Raiders struck first, as one hit, a walk, and an error gave Mount Union a 2-0 lead in the top of the second.
The Spartans would make it a one run game in the bottom half of the second inning, as junior outfielder Kevin Carney (University Heights, OH) would reach on an error by the centerfielder to score freshman infielder Steve Crilley (Glenshaw, PA), who singled earlier, making it a 2-1 game.
After the Purple Raiders put up one run in the top of the third, the Spartans would tie the game in the bottom of the fourth, as junior infielder Ben Faber (Fostoria, OH) would score on a groundout by freshman outfielder Zach Hall (Germantown, MD) to make it a 3-2 game. Freshman catcher Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH – pictured) would double to the gap in right center to score Faber, making it a 3-3 game. Mullins finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with one RBI.
The Purple Raiders would take the lead again in the top of the fifth, as a sacrifice fly by Greg Ferrell gave Mount Union a 4-3 advantage. They would tack on one more run in the top of the sixth to take a 5-3 lead.
