CASE 4, HIRAM 3...
CLEVELAND, OH (April 5, 2008) – Freshman catcher Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH – pictured) had a 3-for-3 day at the plate with one run and two RBI, as the Case Western Reserve University baseball team claimed a 4-3 victory over the visiting Terriers from Hiram College in game two of today's doubleheader.
The Spartans will play two again tomorrow when they host the Purple Raiders from Mount Union College at Nobby's Ballpark. Game one is scheduled to begin at 12:00 p.m.
The Spartans got going early, as a double to right field by Mullins scored freshman infielder Kevin Train (Mechanicsburg, PA) and sophomore outfielder Phil Keefe (Newtonville, MA) to give Case Western Reserve a 2-0 lead after the first inning. The Spartans would tack on one more in the bottom of the third to take a 3-0 lead.
Hiram scores its first runs of the game in the top of the sixth to break senior pitcher Kevin Haley's (Kent, OH) five and one-thirds innings of scoreless baseball, as a double by Frank Liscio scored two Terriers to make it a 3-2 game. A bloop-single to center by Mark Reifsnyder off freshman pitcher Aron Kale (Northridge, CA) made it a 3-3 game.
The Spartans would answer an inning later, as a leadoff double by Mullins, followed by freshman Cory Pecoraro's (Strongsville, OH) first career triple gave Case Western Reserve a 4-3 lead.
Kale claimed the victory for the Spartans, while Jeremy Barchie took the loss for the Terriers.
