CASE BASEBALL—2008

Justin Duncombe picked up the win for the Judges, while freshman Aron Kale (Northridge, CA) took the loss for the Spartans.

The Judges jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first, as Dave Almeida's sacrifice fly scored Tony Deshler to give Brandeis a 1-0 lead. They would tack on two more in the inning to make it a 3-0 game.

Almeida would further extend Brandeis' lead in the bottom of the fourth, as his line-drive single down the left-field line would score two, giving the Judges a 5-0 advantage. Brandeis would score three more in the inning to make it an 8-0 game.

The Spartans got some momentum going in the top of the sixth, as sophomore outfielder Phil Keefe (Newtonville, MA – pictured) hit a ground-rule double with two outs to give Case Western Reserve its second runner in scoring position on the night. However, they couldn't cash in, and the Judges remained with an 8-0 lead. Keefe finished 1-for-3 at the dish.

The Judges would all but seal the victory in the bottom of the sixth, as three runs on three hits and one Spartan error gave Brandeis an 11-0 lead.

Freshman catcher Steve Bills (Greensburg, PA) finished 1-for-3 in the game, while freshman first baseman Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH) finished 1-for-2.

The Spartans will again play the late game tomorrow when they take on the Yellowjackets (7-2, 2-2 UAA) from the University of Rochester at 6:00 p.m. on day four of the 2008 University Athletic Association Baseball Championships.
