CASE BASEBALL—2008

The Spartans (1-5) will be in action again tomorrow when they take on the Judges from Brandeis at 4:00 p.m.

Washington starting pitcher Andy Webb struck-out eight Spartans through four innings, and finished with nine strikeouts in five and one-third innings of work. Case Western Reserve freshman pitcher Devin Dye (Canton, OH) pitched well, going six innings, allowing four earned runs on 10 hits with two strikeouts and two walks.

Washington jumped out to an early lead, after Matt Bayer singled home Scott Kennedy to put the Bears ahead, 1-0, in the bottom of the first. They would tack on two more runs in the bottom of the third to make it a 3-0 game.

Freshman catcher Chad Mullins (Fredericksburg, OH – pictured) put the Spartans on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth, as his two-run homer over the wall in right-center made it a 3-2 game. Mullins finished the game 2-for-4 with two RBI.

Freshman centerfielder Clay Hurley (Connellsville, PA) started the top of the seventh with a base-hit up the middle, and after reaching third after stealing second and a wild pitch, sophomore left-fielder Phil Keefe (Newtonville, MA) hit a sacrifice fly to score Hurley, making it a 3-3 game.

The Bears would answer in the bottom half of the seventh, as Bayer's fielder's choice scored Greg Kennedy to give Washington a 4-3 lead. They would tally one more in the bottom of the eighth to take a 5-3 lead.

The Spartans rallied in the top half of the ninth inning, as senior shortstop Kevin Haley (Kent, OH) led off the inning with a single. The team would capitalize on two Washington errors to score three runs in the inning, taking a 6-5 lead.

But the Bears would take it in the bottom of the ninth, getting three consecutive hits with two outs, capping it off with a walk-off grand slam by Lehmann.

Bayer took the win for the Bears, while freshman pitcher Zach Fry (Colorado Springs, CO) took the loss for the Spartans, putting him at 1-1 this season.
