BRANDEIS 12, CASE 2...
SANFORD, FL (March 11, 2008) – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team dropped its first game of the 2008 University Athletic Association Championships, as the Spartans fell 12-2 to the Judges of Brandeis University.
The Spartans (1-3) will play twice tomorrow when they take on the University of Rochester at 11:00 a.m. and Washington University (Mo.) at 2:30 p.m.
Already up 1-0 after the first inning of play, the Judges extended their lead when sophomore John O'Brion belted a Kyle Silk (Hudson, OH) fastball over the wall in right-center to take a 4-0 advantage. Silk went five innings, giving up six runs (three earned) and walking just one batter.
The Spartans would answer in the bottom of the sixth, as sophomore right-fielder Phil Keefe (Newtonville, MA – pictured) singled home sophomore center-fielder Clay Hurley (Connellsville, PA) to put Case Western Reserve on the scoreboard. The Spartans would tack on one more run to make it a 6-2 game.
But the Judges would seal the win in the seventh and eighth, as they combined for eight hits and six runs to hand the Spartans their third loss of the season.
Brandeis combined for 16 hits on the afternoon, while Case Western Reserve had just two.
