CASE 5, #5 EMORY 4...
ATLANTA, GA (March 7, 2008) – Down 4-1 in the top of the ninth, the Case Western Reserve University baseball team rallied for four runs on three hits and held the No. 5 ranked Eagles from Emory Univesity scoreless in the bottom half of the inning to come away with a 5-4 victory at Chappell Field in Atlanta, Ga.
The Spartans (1-0) led off the top of the ninth inning with back-to-back singles from freshman Zach Fry (Colorado Springs, CO) and sophomore Phil Keefe (Newtonville, MA), and after Emory's Will Gumm hit senior Kevin Haley (Kent, OH) and walked junior Ben Faber (Fostoria, OH), sophomore Clay Hurley (Connellsville, PA) singled and after a throwing error scored three, the Spartans had a 5-4 lead. Hurley finished with two hits and two RBI on the afternoon.
Fry, Keefe, and Haley each finished with two hits on the afternoon, as the Spartans tallied nine hits against the Eagles, who drop to 9-3 after the loss.
Freshman pitcher Kyle Silk (Hudson, OH – pictured) yielded just two runs on nine hits and one walk over seven innings in his first collegiate game. Silk pitched five innings of scoreless baseball after allowing two runs in the first two innings.
The Spartans got some momentum going in the top of the fifth, as Keefe led of the inning with a double to the right-center gap, while Haley moved Keefe over to third after a line-drive single to right-field. However, the Spartans were unable to cash in, as the Eagles remained with a 2-0 advantage.
The Eagles would extend their lead in the bottom of the eighth after a single by Scott Schwartz scored David Hissey and Steve Bralver, giving Emory a 4-1 lead.
The victory is Case Western Reserve's second in 21 games against Emory, while the loss snaps a five-game winning-streak for the Eagles.
The Spartans will head to LaGrange, Ga. tomorrow and Sunday for games against LaGrange College. First pitch is 1:00 p.m. on both days.
