HIRAM 10, CASE 9...
CLEVELAND, OH (April 4, 2007) – Senior catcher Marshall Hampton (St. Petersburg, FL-pictured) went 2-for-4 with a grand slam home run, but the Case Western Reserve University baseball team lost to Hiram College 10-9 in extra innings in the first game of a doubleheader.
The Spartans scored six runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-6 lead, during which senior outfielder David Adams (Middlefield, OH) hit a two-run double, and Hampton hit the grand slam. Hiram tied it up at seven in the bottom of the sixth, and the game went into extra innings. In the top of the eighth, sophomore infielder Ben Faber (Fostoria, OH) and Adams each hit RBI singles to give Case a 9-7 lead, but could not hold the lead in the bottom of the inning, as fielders committed three errors. For the day, Adams went 3-for-4 with four RBIs and Faber went 2-for-2 with two walks and three runs scored.
Junior pitcher Kevin Haley (Kent, OH) took the loss (2-2) in relief, giving up three unearned runs on four hits in two and one-third innings. The starter, senior John Thuermer (Dublin, OH), gave up seven runs (five earned) on nine hits and one walk in five and two-thirds innings, striking out three.
