CASE 7, LAKE ERIE 3...
CLEVELAND, OH (March 23, 2007) –Senior pitcher J.R. Doolos (Clayton, OH-pictured) threw a complete game as the Case Western Reserve University baseball team defeated Lake Erie College 7-3 at Nobby's Ballpark.
The Spartan batters got the scoring started early. In the first inning, after one-out singles by junior shortstop Kevin Haley (Kent, OH) and senior second baseman Kevin Sudnik (Brookpark, OH), junior first baseman Jamal Mahmud (Flemington, NJ) hit a three-run home run, his third of the season. In the fifth inning, Sudnik drove in two with a two-out single. The Spartans scored two more runs in the eighth, as Sudnik singled and later scored on a fielding error, and sophomore third baseman Ben Faber (Fostoria, OH) had a two-out RBI single. On the day, Sudnik went 3-for-4 with a walk and two RBIs, Haley went 2-for-5 with one run scored, and senior outfielder David Adams (Middlefield, OH) went 2-for-5 with a double. Case fielders committed two errors leading to two unearned runs in a Lake Erie ninth inning that spoiled the shutout bid.
Doolos gave up three runs (one earned) on eight hits and one walk, striking out four in his nine innings of work.
The Spartans next play at home against Myers University on Sunday for a doubleheader starting at noon.
