WASHINGTON 15, CASE 6...
CLEVELAND, OH (March 13, 2006) – Junior third baseman Jamal Mahmud (Flemington, NJ-pictured) went two-for-four with four RBIs, hitting his second home run in three games, as the Case Western Reserve University baseball team lost their University Athletic Association (UAA) opener to Washington University 15-6.
Mahmud hit an RBI double in the first inning to tie the score at one. In the second inning, sophomore left fielder Ben Faber (Fostoria, OH) drove in a run with a single, and later scored on a wild pitch, giving the Spartans a 3-1 lead. They held a 3-2 lead through five innings before Washington exploded for five runs in the top of the 6th and three in the top of the seventh. Mahmud’s three-run homer pulled the Spartans to within four, but Washington pulled away in the final two innings. Faber finished the day one-for-two with two walks. Freshman right fielder Phil Keefe (Newtonville, MA) went two-for-four with two doubles, a walk, and a run scored.
Senior pitcher John Thuermer (Dublin, OH) was the starting pitcher and got charged with the loss. He pitched six and two-thirds innings, giving up ten runs (seven earned) on 14 hits, walking three and striking out three.
The Spartans (1-2, 0-1 UAA) will play the University of Rochester tomorrow (2:30 p.m.) at the UAA Championship Tournament.
