CASE 9, OTTERBEIN 7...
CLEVELAND, OH (March 10, 2006) – Junior third baseman Jamal Mahmud (Flemington, NJ) went 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and a two-run double, and senior first baseman J.R. Doolos (Clayton, OH) went 3-for-4 with 3 RBIs, leading the Case Western Reserve University baseball team to a 9-7 victory against Otterbein College, ranked #1 in USA Today’s preseason poll, which captured a split of their season-opening doubleheader.
It was a back-and-forth affair, as the lead switched hands four times. Mahmud’s first-inning homer started the scoring off quickly. Case tied the score at 4-4 in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Doolos and sophomore outfielder Ben Faber (Fostoria, OH). Mahmud’s two-run double in the fifth inning gave the Spartans a 6-4 lead. Then, after giving up three runs in the bottom of the fifth, junior catcher Marshall Hampton (St. Petersburg, FL) tied the game at 7 in the sixth with an RBI double. Doolos gave the Spartans the lead for good in the top of the seventh with a two-run double.
Junior pitcher Kevin Haley (Kent, OH-pictured) pitched two shutout innings on one hit and one walk for the win (1-0). Case’s starting pitcher was senior John Thuermer (Dublin, OH), who pitched five innings, giving up seven runs (six earned) on ten hits, walking one and striking out none.
Case, with a record of 1-1 on the season, will travel to Sanford, Florida for the UAA Championship games beginning with a 6:00 PM contest on Tuesday against Washington University.
