OTTERBEIN 7, CASE 1...
CLEVELAND, OH (March 10, 2006) – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team opened the 2007 season with a 7-1 loss to Otterbein College, ranked #1 in USA Today’s preseason poll.
Freshman outfielder Phil Keefe (Newtonville, MA) drove in Case’s only run with an RBI single in the 2nd inning, scoring junior third baseman Jamal Mahmud (Flemington, NJ-pictured). Mahmud had led off the inning with a double, and was moved over to third by a groundout by junior second baseman Kevin Haley (Kent, OH) prior to the Keefe single. Keefe finished the game 2-for-3. The team committed five defensive errors, leading to four unearned runs for Otterbein.
Case starting pitcher J.R. Doolos (Clayton, OH) took the loss (0-1), pitching five innings and giving up seven runs (three earned) on ten hits, striking out four and walking two.
