CASE BASEBALL—2006

Case scored two runs to take the early lead as Dan McNally (Pittsburgh, PA) led off the bottom of the first inning by getting hit by a pitch. Briggs singled to score McNally before stealing second to reach scoring position. Briggs scored on an RBI single by sophomore designated hitter Kevin Sudnik (Brookpark, OH). Thomas More took its first lead of the game behind a three run top of the second inning. The Saints took a two run lead after scoring a run in the top of the third inning.

Case took the lead behind a four run fourth inning. Freshman Ben Faber (Fostoria, OH) began the inning with a single. With two outs, senior left fielder Josh Knipp’s (Defiance, OH) bunt single continued the inning and allowed Briggs to get two of his three RBIs. After four innings, Case led 6-4 before the Saints scored a run in the top of the seventh inning to cut the lead to one, but the Spartans held on.

Senior pitcher Rich Mullen (Columbus, OH) picked up the win in six innings of work. He surrendered four runs on seven hits while striking out six. Junior John Thuermer (Dublin, OH) recorded the save as he surrendered one run on one hit in the bottom of the seventh, but held on to give the Spartans their 10th win of the season. Case is now 10-17-1 on the season while Thomas More falls to 18-13 after being swept in the doubleheader.
