WASHINGTON 11, CASE 1...
SANFORD, FL (March 15, 2005) – In the final game of the UAA Championship Tournament, the Case Western Reserve University baseball team fell 11-1 to the tournament champion Washington University Bears. Case finished last in the tournament with a 1-5 UAA record while Washington won their first ever outright UAA Championship with a 5-1 record.
The game was close with the Bears holding a slim 4-1 lead entering the bottom half of the seventh inning. Washington exploded for three runs in the seventh and four in the eighth to get the victory. The Bears had five starters with two hits and seven different players reached base as they pounded out 12 hits total.
Joe McCrackin (Tallmadge, OH) was the lone Spartan with a multi-hit performance as he was two for three in the game and five for seven on the day including going 3-4 in the morning against Rochester. J.R. Dooloos pitched 6.1 innings in the loss, giving up eight hits and seven runs (three earned). Dan McPheeters got the win for Washington as he gave up only five hits and one run in eight innings of work.
Both McCrackin and Marshall Hampton (St. Petersburg, FL) finished the UAA Tournament with eight hits apiece for .381 batting averages respectively. Mark Jungerman (Avon Lake, OH) led Case with four RBIs over the tournament. Pitcher Josh Thuemer (Dublin, OH) finished the tournament with a 1-1 record and a 2.92 ERA in 12.1 innings of action.
