SANFORD, FL (March 15, 2005) – Case Western Reserve University junior Josh Knipp (Defiance, OH) had three RBI's in leading the Spartans to their first UAA Championship Tournament victory, a 4-3 win over the University of Rochester. The victory improves Case to 4-7 overall and 1-4 in the UAA, while Rochester evened to 3-3 in the UAA and 5-3 overall.
The game was tight all the way through, with Case sophomore pitcher Josh Thuemer (Dublin, OH) going for nine strong innings, allowing only seven hits and three runs (two earned) with three strikeouts. Rochester meanwhile used four different pitchers over nine innings.
The two teams entered the eighth inning knotted at two apiece, when the Yellow Jackets were able to go up 3-2 with a run in the bottom half of the inning. With Case down a run in the ninth inning, Joe McCrackin (Tallmadge, OH) was able to reach base on a shortstop error. Two walks later and the bases were loaded with two outs and Knipp at the plate. The junior delivered a base hit up the middle to drive in David Adams (Middlefield, OH), who pinch ran for McCrackin, and Chris Sisson (West Palm Beach, FL).
McCrackin also had a solid day for Case with a three hit performance including a double. Dan Price led Rochester going 3-4 from the plate with an RBI single to give the Yellow Jackets the 3-2 lead in the eighth inning.
