ROCHESTER 14 , CASE 2...
SANFORD, FL (March 12, 2005) – The Case Western Reserve University baseball team dropped to 0-2 in the UAA Championship Tournament with a 14-2 loss to the University of Rochester in seven innings. The loss moves Case to 3-4 overall and 0-2 in the UAA while Rochester remains undefeated at 5-0 and 2-0 in the UAA.
Rochester sent 12 men to the plate in the eight-run fourth inning with Yellow Jacket shortstop Dan Pfohl going 3-3 with two doubles, two runs, and three RBIs. Yellow Jacket pitcher Matt Koren threw six innings of work and allowed just four hits and two earned runs while striking out nine Spartan batters.
Case's only two runs came in the sixth inning. Marshall Hampton ( St. Petersburg , FL ) led off the inning with a base hit and next up was Jonathan Maruri ( Mt. Kisco , NY ) who hit a double to moved Hampton to third base. With two outs, Mark Jungerman ( Avon Lake , OH ) singled to score both Hampton and Maruri.
Spartan pitcher Max Briggs ( Cleveland Heights , OH ) started the game and tossed 3.1 innings allowing nine hits and ten runs (seven earned). David Adams ( Middlefield , OH ) relieved Briggs and pitched 3.2 innings to record five strike outs while yielding four runs on four hits and three walks.
