EMORY 11, CASE 10...
SANFORD, FL (March 11, 2005) – Case Western Reserve University sophomore catcher Marshall Hampton (St. Petersburg, FL) went four for six from the plate and scored two runs but it wasn't enough as the Spartans were defeated by Emory University 11-10 in 11 innings. It was the first game of the University Athletic Association Championship for each team with Case moving to 3-3 and 0-1 in the UAA and Emory improving to 9-4 and 1-0 in the UAA.
The Spartans jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning but Emory battled back to take an 8-5 advantage in the fifth inning. Case surged ahead and went into the ninth inning with a one-run lead, 10-9. With two outs and two on in the bottom of the ninth inning, Emory was able to get a base hit to extend the game to extra innings. In the bottom of the 11 th inning, Josh Thuemer ( Dublin , OH ) walked in the winning run for the Eagles with the bases loaded and two outs.
Case sophomore J.R. Dooloos ( Clayton , OH ) started the game and pitched seven and one-third innings, giving up seven hits, nine earned runs, and eight walks. Thuemer pitched three and one-third innings yielding two hits, two earned runs, and seven walks.
Recording three hits apiece for the Spartans were Max Briggs ( Cleveland Heights , OH ) and Mark Jungerman ( Avon Lake , OH ). Emory was led by Tim Cournoyer who set a UAA record with six RBIs on a double and a home run.
