SPARTAN WOMEN'S BASKETBALL—2009

brandeis 76, case 56...

CLEVELAND, OH (February 22, 2009) - Case Western Reserve University freshman forward Erin Hollinger’s (Chardon, OH-pictured) 12 points wasn’t enough to get the Spartans past Brandeis University this afternoon in Waltham, Mass.  Case Western Reserve (10-14, 3-10 UAA), who lost 76-56, ends the season Saturday at Emory University with a 2:00 p.m. game.

Senior forward Lauren Orlando made a layup at 15:55 to put Brandeis (17-6, 7-6 UAA) up 7-2, but Hollinger finished off a 6-1 run with a layup at 13:03 to tie (8-8) the game.  The lead changed three times after that before the Judges pulled away and went up 10-point, 24-14, with another Orlando layup at 7:47.  Brandeis hit two big three-pointers during the last two minutes of the first half to lead 41-23 at the break.  The Spartans turned the ball over 13 times in the first 20 minutes and shot just 29.6 percent.

Brandeis senior forward Amanda Wells made it a 21-point game, 51-30, with a pair of free throws at 13:34 and the Judges lead never dipped below 19 points in the second half as Case Western Reserve’s shooting woes continued. The Judges, who out rebounded the Spartans 43-31 on the way to winning their fourth straight, were led by junior guard Jessica Chapin's game-high 17 points.

Sophomore guard Caitlin Henry (Fairfax, VA) and freshman forward Chelsea Peck (Pittsburgh, PA) added 12 and eight points, respectively for Case Western Reserve.
