SPARTAN VOLLEYBALL—2008

2008 UAA championship...

CLEVELAND, OH (November 8, 2008) - The Case Western Reserve University volleyball team posted their best finish at a University Athletic Association (UAA) Championship since 2003 this weekend in St. Louis at Washington University.  The Spartans placed fifth [out of eight teams] with a 2-2 record.

Case Western Reserve dropped its first two matches on Friday, losing 3-1 (18-25, 21-25, 26-24, 25-27) to Carnegie Mellon University and 3-0 (18-25, 10-25, 10-25) to eventual UAA champion Washington.  The Spartans rebounded Saturday to defeat New York University 3-1 (25-19, 25-17, 17-25, 25-21) and the University of Chicago 3-2 (24-26, 25-16, 19-25, 25-22, 15-13) in the fifth place match.

Freshman middle hitter Tricia McCutchan (Hamilton, OH-pictured) had a team-high 66 kills at the championship while sophomore outside hitter Beth Karpinski (Avon Lake, OH) added 35.  McCutchan had her best performance in the fifth place match when she recorded 23 kills and seven blocks.   

Senior setter Julie Schaefer (Independence, OH) led the Spartans with 84 assists and had 48 digs in the four UAA matches.  Schaefer, who played in her last collegiate matches over the weekend, had 31 assists and 15 digs against Carnegie Mellon.

Case Western Reserve finished the season 20-14 overall and 5-6 in the UAA.
