ncaa championships day two...
CLEVELAND, OH (March 7, 2009) - Senior Drew Gardella (Sagamore Hills, OH-pictured) notched another win on day two and captured the sixth place title at the NCAA Championships today at Coe College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. He would go 4-3 over the weekend while taking on the best Division III wrestlers in the nation.
In his opening match on Saturday, Gardella recorded a 6-2 decision win over Muhlenberg’s Robert Kein which included back points late in the match. Gardella would then meet the number two seed Jacob Naig [Wartburg], who he had lost 15-4 against on day one, this time closing the gap but still dropping the match 8-4. Naig would go on to win the third place title.
Gardella would then drop his final match to the number one seed Willy Hilst [Augsburg] to end his day and receive sixth place honors in the event. Case Western Reserve finished with ten total points which landed them in 25th place out of the 62 teams that participated in the brackets. Wartburg would place first in the event after finishing the weekend with 117.5 points and two individual champions.
