SPARTAN MEN'S TENNIS—2009
ITA CENTRAL REGIONAL...
CLEVELAND, OH (September 27, 2009) -
The Case Western Reserve University men’s tennis team was one of 26 teams to participate in the 2009 ITA Central Regional this past weekend at Washington University in St. Louis.
Senior No. 1 John Smetona (Medina, OH), who was seeded No. 17 this fall, made it to the round of 32. Smetona defeated DePauw University’s Evan Hunter 7-5 and 6-2 in his opening match, but lost to DePauw’s Scott Sandager, the No. 9 seed, 6-2, 2-6 and 6-2.
Sophomore No. 2 Rohan Patel (Cincinnati, OH) also made it to the round of 32, defeating his first two opponents at the tournament, including the University of Chicago's Dillon Klincke, the No. 17 seed, 6-4, 6-7, 6-4.
Freshman No. 4 Richard Brunsting (Nashville, TN-pictured) also played well at his first regional. After losing to the No. 6 seed in his first match, Brunsting won five consecutive matches in the consolation bracket, which included a 6-4, 4-6 (1-0) victory over Kalamazoo College's Cyrus Jadun, who was the No. 4 seed and nationally ranked (No. 11/Central Region).
The Spartans played 15 more matches at this year's event. Last year, they played 24 matches (15-9) and this year, the played 39 matches (20-19). Case Western Reserve travels to Penn State Behrend College October 9.
