Mercyhurst Box -- Carnegie Mellon Box

CLEVELAND, OH (September 12, 2009) - The Case Western Reserve University men’s tennis team opened their fall season with a 1-1 split at Allegheny College’s Heath Invitational.  The Spartans defeated Mercyhurst College  8-1, but fell to University Athletic Association foe, Carnegie Mellon University, 8-1.

The only match Case Western Reserve lost versus Mercyhurst was No. 2 singles. Senior John Smetona (Medina, OH-pictured) defeated Mercyhurst’s Mijo Cotic 6-4 and 6-3 at No. 1 singles and sophomore Sean Carr (Columbus, OH) blanked Mercyhurst’s Justin Tompkins 6-0 and 6-0 at No. 6 singles.  

The Spartans lone win against Carnegie Mellon was at No. 3 doubles where Smetona and freshman Richard Brunsting (Nashville, TN) defeated the Tartan’s Civan Orhan and Jeremy King 8-6. 

Case Western Reserve will next head to the Wilson/ITA Central Regional at Washington University in St. Louis September 25-28.
