CLEVELAND, OH (March 14, 2009) - Junior Obinna Nwanna (Maumee, OH) displayed his wide array of skills on track and field’s biggest stage as he became an All-American today with a fourth place finish in the pentathlon at the Division III NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, IN.
"I don't know what to think, but I'm real excited," Nwanna said after competing today. "I gave my best performance out there and it was nice to get to compete against the best competition in Division III."
Nwanna scored 3,627 total points in the five pentathlon events which placed him fourth among the 12 athletes competing. His highest score was in the 55-meter hurdles where his time of 8.06 seconds scored 818 points. He tallied 752 points in the shot put with a 14.38 meter toss which was the first place throw in the event.
He also had a strong showing in the three other events as his 1,000-meter run time of 3:00.78 was a personal record and his long jump of 6.38 meters and his 1.93 meter high jump were both season highs.
Nwanna will be back in action on Mar. 21 when Case Western Reserve’s outdoor season begins at the Emory University Invitational.
