Spartan men First, woMen Second, at Bill Sudeck Classic

CLEVELAND, OH (September 5, 2009) -
The Case Western Reserve University men’s cross country team took first place at the 9th Annual Bill Sudeck
Classic at Squire Valleevue Farm in Hunting Valley, Ohio. The women's team finished second, one point behind first place Baldwin-Wallace. Senior runner Elaine Simpson (Arlington Heights, IL ) took the individual title on the women's side.
Simpson's time of 19:15.65 in the 5K race was 19 seconds ahead of the second place competitor. Senior Colleen Hefferman (Columbus, OH), sophomore Natalia Cabrera (Shaker Heights, OH) and junior Cindy Spahn (Wildwood, MO) all placed in the top 10. Hefferman placed sixth (19:48.96), Cabrera took eighth (20:04.65) and Spahn finished tenth (20:21.35).
Senior Mike Vaughn (Bethel Park, PA) led the men with a third place finish in the 8K race (27:11.82). Also in the top ten for the Spartans were junior Ethan Kleinbaum (Rutherford, NJ) with a fifth place time of 27:17.98, junior Mark Grogan (Coraopolis, PA), whose time of 27:27.41 was good for
seventh and junior Tim Smith (Sandusky, OH) with a ninth place finish (27:40.84).
The Spartans will be in action next on Saturday September 19th when they travel to Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI.
