Kathy Lanese began her second stint coaching at Case when she was appointed head women's and men's cross country on June 5, 2001. Lanese also served as head women's track coach from 2001-2006. Three years into her second stint at Case, Lanese was named the Ohio Cross Country Coach of the Year following the 2003 season in which her men's team finished an outstanding 20th at the NCAA Division III Championships. In 2006 Lanese was named University Athletic Association Coach of the Year after leading the women's team to a first place finish in the UAA and a remarkable tenth place finish at the 2006 NCAA Division III National Championships. Lanese was also named the 2006/2007 USFCCCA NCAA All-Region Coach of the Year and was named the best coach in the state by the Ohio Coaches Association. A year later, Lanese coached the women to a sixth place finish at the 2007 NCAA Division III National Championships and the team finished the season ranked sixth in the country.

In 2008, both Lanese's teams reached the NCAA Division III National Championships. The women finished 16th, while the men took 29th place. Both teams were ranked in the NCAA Division II polls throughout the season by the USTFCCA, with the men peaking at No. 11 and women at No. 6. The women again took the UAA Championships and Lanese was named UAA Coach of the Year for the second time.

Lanese first came to Case in 1990 when she was named the head women's cross country coach and assistant track and field coach. She left Case from 1996-2001 to serve as the head women's cross country and track and field coach at John Carroll University.

A 1986 graduate of Ohio University, Lanese was a scholarship athlete who competed in middle-distance and distance events. She was a member of the track team that won two-consecutive Mid American Conference championships (1983 and 84), and the All-Ohio Cross Country Championships in 1982. Individually, Lanese finished 11th and 14th, respectively at the MAC championships and was a member of the record-setting 3,200 meter relay and distance medley relay. During her senior year, Lanese was named captain of both the track and cross country teams. She was voted the team's most improved runner in 1985 and also set an indoor record in the 1,500-meter run.

Lanese received her B.S. in foods and nutrition from Ohio University in 1986. She received her certification in athletic training in 1993 from Cleveland State University .

Kathy is married to Bob and has two children, Evan (15) and Kasey (12). The Lanese family resides in Cleveland Hts, OH.
