case 76, emory 65...
CLEVELAND, OH (February 28, 2008) - Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Reid Anderson (Avon Lake, OH-pictured) broke out of his shooting slump this afternoon in Atlanta, Georgia. Anderson scored a career- and game-high 28 points in the Spartans’ 76-65 season-ending victory over Emory University in University Athletic Association (UAA) action.
It was Anderson’s first double-digit performance since February 8 [at Rochester, 10] and 20-point game since January 3 [at Kenyon, 26]. Case Western Reserve finishes the season 8-17 overall and 5-9 in the UAA. The Spartans’ five conference wins are the most since the 1999-00 season [7-8].
Case Western Reserve forced the Eagles (7-18, 2-12) to use three time outs in the first nine minutes of the game. Anderson’s layup at 16:36 and three-pointer at 16:02 put the Spartans up 14-0 as Emory did not score until 15:44 [14-2]. The Eagles third time out came after senior guard Steve Young (St. Louis, MO) nailed a three-pointer at 11:47 and followed it up with a layup at 11:10 to give Case Western Reserve a 21-point lead, 27-6, with 11 minutes remaining in the half. After leading by 18 [35-17] with 6:29 left, Emory outscored the Spartans 13-2 to end the half trailing by seven, 37-30. Junior forward Anthony Fernandez accounted for eight points during the Eagle’s run and finished the half with 14. Case Western Reserve shot 81 percent during the first ten minutes of the half, but that dropped to 50 percent by the break.
Case Western Reserve built its lead back into the teens early in the second half as Anderson finished off a 13-4 run with another three ball at 16:14 that gave his team a 16-point cushion, 50-34. The Spartans still led by 16, 58-42, with under 10 minutes remaining in the game, but Fernandez made it a four-point game, 63-59, and finished off a 17-5 Emory run with a jumper at 5:45. Fernandez finished with a team-high 22 points, but the Eagles would get no closer. Just a little over two minutes later while holding Emory scoreless, sophomore guard Kevin Herring hit a jumper that put Case Western Reserve back up 15, 74-59. Herring finished with 13 points and eight assists and Young added rounded out Case Western Reserve’s double-figure performances with 13. Young ends his collegiate career second on the all-time three-pointer list with 192, just seven shy of John Link’s record 199. He also tallied 1,053 career points as a Spartan.
