CLEVELAND, OH (February 15, 2009) - Case Western Reserve University sophomore guard Kevin Herring (Columbus, OH-pictured) recorded a double-double this afternoon in a 71-63 home loss to No. 2 Washington University in a University Athletic Association (UAA) contest at Horsburgh Gymnasium. Herring had a game-high 23 points and a team-high 10 rebounds, his second double-double of the season.
Case Western Reserve (7-15, 4-7) travels to New York City on Friday to face New York University at 8:00 p.m.
Case Western Reserve didn’t score [Washington 11-0 run] until 14:35 when sophomore guard Kevin Herring hit a pair of free throws. Herring would score nine points during a 1:20 span to bring the Spartans within six, 15-9, at 13:15. Herring finished with 17 points in the first half. Junior forward Zach Kelley put the Bears back ahead 10, 25-15, with a layup at 9:33, but Case Western Reserve did not give up. Senior guard Steve Young finished off an 18-6 run with a three-pointer at 1:12 that gave the Spartans their first lead, 33-31, and they held it at the half, 36-35.
The lead changed multiple times during the first five minutes of the second half before Washington (21-1, 11-0) would pull away. Young put Case Western Reserve up 45-44 with another three-pointer at 15:11, but the Bears would go on a 16-4 run ending with a junior guard Aaron Thompson layup to take an 11-point lead, 60-49, at 6:05. The Spartans did cut it to four, 64-60, via a layup by Herring with less than two minutes left in the game, but that’s as close as they would get. Both teams shot poorly [29 percent] in the second half, but Washington walked away with its 12th-straight win of the season.
Thompson led four Bears’ players in double figures with 19 points. Young added 12 points for Case Western Reserve, which included three three-pointers.
