CLEVELAND, OH (February 13, 2009) - Sophomore guard Kevin Herring (Columbus, OH-pictured) dazzled the crowd with an assortment of clutch three-pointers on his way to a team-high 16 points, guiding Case Western Reserve University (7-14, 4-6 UAA) to a 66-59 win over UAA-rival the University of Chicago (4-17, 4-6 UAA) tonight in Horsburgh Gymnasium.

Case Western Reserve will play their second UAA game of the weekend on Sunday when they host Washington University at 12:00 p.m. in Horsburgh Gymnasium.

The Spartans and Maroons traded baskets early on until sophomore guard Bryan Erce (Berwyn, IL), who scored a team-high seven points in the first half, knocked down two free throws to tie the game 14-14 at the 10:44 mark. Sophomore forward Alex Hildebrandt (Akron, OH) would then connect on a deep three-pointer to give Case Western Reserve their first lead [17-14] at 9:40. Chicago’s senior forward Adam Machones would then take over, scoring ten of his game-high 22 points in the last seven minutes of the half to put the Maroons ahead 34-29 going into the locker room.

The Spartans would come out riding sophomore guard Kevin Herring’s hot hand, as he landed back-to-back three-pointers to give Case Western Reserve the lead [41-39] at the 16:12 mark. Chicago would regain the lead minutes later, but sophomore guard Reid Anderson [Avon Lake, OH] would place a bounce pass between several defenders to Herring for a lay-up that put the Spartans back in front 52-50 at 6:29. Herring would then land a buzzer-beating three-pointer with under a minute left in the game that put Case Western Reserve ahead 59-54 cementing the win.

Anderson added eight points and eight rebounds, and Erce scored 10 points on the night while going 6-of-7 from the free throw line.
