CLEVELAND, OH (October 17, 2009) - Senior running back Corey Checkan (Georgetown, PA-pictured) scored three touchdowns, and senior quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH) threw for 265 yards (21-of-34) and a touchdown in just over a half of play, as the No. 11 Case Western Reserve University (6-0, 0-0 UAA) football team defeated Ohio Wesleyan University (1-5, 1-3 NCAC) by a score of 55-7 at Case Field.  The Spartans extended their regular-season winning streak to 27.

With the win, the seniors on the team, became the all-time winningest (2006-2009: 32-7) class in school history (1983-1986: 31-4-1).

The Spartans scored five touchdowns in the first half. They struck quickly, as two long pass plays set up a two-yard touchdown run by Checkan just 1:25 into the game. With 3:29 left in the first, Checkan scored again from one yard out. A long pass to senior receiver Tim Cowdrick (Mentor, OH) set up Checkan’s third TD run with 8:09 left in the second quarter. A screen pass to junior receiver Zach Homyk (Chicago, IL) with 4:02 left in the half turned into a 28-yard TD pass, as Homyk would reverse field and break tackles on the way to the end zone. Senior running back Greg Meyer (Clearwater, FL) had a 12-yard TD run with 42 seconds left in half to give the Spartans a 35-0 lead at halftime.

Whalen played just one offensive series in the third quarter before junior backup Joey Baum (Dalton, OH) was inserted in the game. Baum would score on a five-yard rush on his first offensive series with 7:35 left in the third quarter. Junior running back Billy Deitmen (Mentor, OH) scored on a one-yard run with 3:20 left in the third quarter. Freshman quarterback Vincent Hokovar (Perry, OH) ran for a one-yard touchdown with 10:17 to go in the game. The Bishops scored a 27-yard passing touchdown with 1:08 left in the game to end the shutout. Baum completed 3-of-5 passes for 44 yards.

The team had seven rushing touchdowns. Meyer led the team in rushing yards with 44. Sophomore Cameron Boyd (Cincinnati, OH) had 34 yards, while junior Derek Bush (Kittanning, PA) had 33. Checkan had 10 yards to go with his three touchdowns. It was his second career three-touchdown game. Cowdrick finished with 92 receiving yards, while Homyk had 83 along with the touchdown. Senior tight end DJ Suitca (Homeworth, OH) added 45. Junior kicker Sam Coffey (Middletown, OH) went 7-for-7 on extra points.

Senior linebacker Jeff Brown (North Olmsted, OH) led the defense with eight tackles, including 2.5 for loss. Freshman defensive lineman Michael Harris (Shaker Heights, OH) and senior linebacker Lee Sasala (Kittanning, PA) each had five tackles. Sophomore defensive end Richard Doolin (Bethel Park, PA) and sophomore defensive lineman Dale English (Middleburg Hts., OH) each had one sack, while Harris and freshman linebacker Michael Fioramonti (Loxahatchee, FL) shared another. The defense held the Bishops to only 14 rushing yards in the game.

The Spartans will host Hiram College next Saturday at 1:00 for this year’s Homecoming game.
