CLEVELAND, OH (September 5, 2009) - Senior quarterback Dan Whalen (Willoughby, OH) had four touchdown passes as the No. 16-ranked Case Western Reserve University football team (1-0, 0-0 UAA) defeated Kenyon College (0-1, 0-0 NCAC)  by a score of 33-21 on Heritage Day. The Spartans won their eighth-straight season opener, their 22nd-straight regular-season game and their seventh-straight against Kenyon.

Case Western Reserve jumped out to a quick 14-0 lead on an 18-yard touchdwon pass from Whalen to senior receiver Tim Cowdrick (Mentor, OH) at 13:54 and a one-yard touchdown pass from Whalen to senior tight end DJ Suitca (Homeworth, OH) at 12:24, Suitca’s first career touchdown catch. Senior kicker Sam Coffey (Middletown, OH) began the second quarter [14:00] with a 20-yard field goal before Lords quarterback Mike Hermanson ran for a touchdown at 8:05 in the second quarter to bring them within 10, 17-7. Cowdrick caught his second pass from Whalen with 4:56 remaining in the half and that put the Spartans back up 17, 24-7. Two minutes later, both teams would trade scores, with Kenyon’s Kyle Toot scoring on a one-yard run followed sixteen seconds later by an 18-yard pass from Whalen to Cowdrick, making the halftime score 30-14, Spartans. The only scoring in the third quarter was a 20-yard field goal by Coffey at 2:34. Kenyon pulled within 12 with a 17-yard touchdown pass at 3:36, but would score no more.

Whalen finished the game 30-of-37 for a career-high 409 yards with 4 touchdowns and one interception. Senior running back Greg Meyer (Clearwater, FL) led the Spartans in rushing yards with 84 on 12 carries. Junior receivers Zach Homyk (Chicago, IL) and Shaun Nicely (Willoughby, OH) both eclipsed 100 yards receiving, with 132 and 104, respectively. Cowdrick had 98 receiving yards to go with his three touchdowns. The offense entered the Kenyon red zone 10 times in the game.

Junior defensive lineman Jake Mey (Brook Park, OH) led the Spartan defense with 11 tackles, including one sack. Sophomore lineman Dale English (Middleburg Hts., OH) had eight tackles and a sack, while senior linebacker Lee Sasala (Kittanning, PA) and sophomore defensive end Richard Doolin (Bethel Park, PA) each had seven tackles. Senior defensive back Mike Pelyak (Newton Falls, OH) added a crucial late-game interception.

Coffey was 2-for-3 on field goals, giving him 23 career and breaking the record of 22 previously held by Mike Weber, who played from 1983-85. Whalen averaged 47 yards punting the ball and Nicely had four kick returns for 100 yards.

Whalen, with 6,789 career passing yards, stands four yards short of the career record currently held by Eli Grant. He will likely pass that mark next Saturday when the Spartans travel to New York to face the University of Rochester in a 12:00 game.
